1. Scope
This Privacy Policy applies to the BitePlan mobile application for iPhone and iPad (the "App") and related support communications. In this policy, "BitePlan," "we," "us," and "our" refer to the developer of the App.
BitePlan provides fishing forecasts, nearby-water discovery, trip planning, and a private catch log. The App does not require you to create an account.
2. Data We Handle
Location and selected-water data
If you grant location permission, BitePlan uses your device location while the App is in use to find nearby lakes, rivers, reservoirs, and coastal waters. BitePlan does not request background location access. You can decline location permission and search for a water by name.
When you choose a water, its name and coordinates are used to request weather and environmental information for that place. We do not operate a server that receives or stores a copy of your device location.
Content stored on your device
The App stores your selected and saved waters, unit preference, cached forecasts, planned trips, and catch-log entries on your device. Catch logs may include a water name and coordinates, date and time, target species, result, catch count, duration, notes, and environmental context. Your catch history may be used on your device to personalize future fishing recommendations near the same water.
Your trip plans, catch outcomes, species, and notes are not sent to BitePlan, published, or used for advertising.
Purchases
If you make an in-app purchase or subscription, Apple processes the transaction. We do not receive your full payment-card details. The App may receive purchase status, product information, transaction identifiers, and subscription entitlement information from Apple to provide and restore paid features.
Support communications
If you contact us, we receive your email address and the information you choose to include, such as your device model, operating-system version, App version, selected water, screenshots, or a description of an issue. Please do not send payment-card details or information that is not needed to resolve your request.
Standard network information
When the App connects to Apple or public data services, those services may automatically receive standard technical information such as your IP address, request date and time, device or app identifier used by the service, and the coordinates or search terms needed to answer the request. Their handling of that information is governed by their own privacy policies.
| Data | Purpose | Where it is handled |
|---|---|---|
| Device location | Find nearby waters | On device and by map/water-data services for the request |
| Selected-water coordinates | Retrieve forecasts, tides, streamflow, and water conditions | On device and by forecast/environmental services for the request |
| Trips, logs, notes, and preferences | Planning, private records, and on-device personalization | On your device |
| Purchase status | Unlock and restore paid features | Apple and the App |
| Support email and message | Respond to your request | Our email service |
3. How We Use Data
We use data only as reasonably necessary to:
- show nearby waters and respond to water-name searches;
- provide weather, daylight, moon-phase, tide, streamflow, and water-temperature information where available;
- calculate and personalize fishing windows on your device;
- save your preferences, planned trips, and private logbook;
- provide, verify, and restore paid features;
- respond to support requests, diagnose problems, and protect the App from misuse; and
- comply with legal obligations and enforce applicable terms.
Where applicable law requires a legal basis, these activities are performed to provide the service you request, based on your consent for device permissions, for our legitimate interests in operating and securing the App, or to comply with law.
4. External Services
BitePlan requests data directly from Apple and public environmental-data providers. Availability varies by location. These providers may process request coordinates, search terms, IP addresses, and standard technical information under their own terms and policies.
- Apple Weather and MapKit Weather forecasts, geocoding, maps, and water search. See Apple Privacy and WeatherKit attribution.
- U.S. Geological Survey U.S. water features, streamflow, and water-temperature observations. See the USGS policies and notices.
- NOAA Tides & Currents U.S. tide predictions and coastal water-temperature observations. See the NOAA privacy notice.
- OpenStreetMap Named-water discovery where available. See the OpenStreetMap Foundation privacy policy.
Apple also operates the App Store and processes purchases, subscriptions, downloads, and related account activity under Apple's privacy policy.
6. Data Retention
On-device data remains on your device until you delete entries, clear the App's data where the operating system provides that option, or uninstall the App. A cached forecast may remain on the device until it is replaced or the App is deleted.
Support messages are retained only as long as reasonably necessary to respond, maintain business and security records, resolve disputes, and meet legal obligations. Apple and the external data services set their own retention periods for information they process.
7. Your Choices and Rights
- Location: Change BitePlan's access at any time in iOS or iPadOS Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services. Water-name search remains available without location permission.
- On-device data: Delete records using available controls in the App, or uninstall the App to remove its locally stored data.
- Purchases: Manage or cancel subscriptions in your Apple Account subscription settings. Refund requests are handled by Apple.
- Support data: Contact us to request access, correction, or deletion of personal information contained in your support correspondence.
Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights to access, correct, delete, restrict, or object to processing of your personal information, or to receive a portable copy. You may also have the right to withdraw consent and complain to a local data-protection authority. We may need to verify your request and may retain information where permitted or required by law.
Because BitePlan does not maintain user accounts or receive your locally stored trip and logbook data, we cannot retrieve or delete that on-device data for you.
8. Children's Privacy
BitePlan is not directed to children under 13, or the equivalent minimum age in the relevant jurisdiction. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has sent us personal information through a support request, contact us so we can review and delete it as appropriate.
9. Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational measures designed to protect information handled by BitePlan. Data sent to external services uses encrypted HTTPS connections. No storage or transmission method is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
You are responsible for protecting access to your device, Apple Account, and email account.
10. International Use
BitePlan and its external services may process information in countries other than the one where you live. Privacy laws may differ in those locations. Where required, appropriate safeguards are used for international transfers. Public environmental coverage, particularly USGS and NOAA station data, is primarily available in the United States.
11. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy to reflect changes to BitePlan, legal requirements, or our data practices. We will post the revised policy with a new "Updated" date. If a change materially affects how personal information is handled, we will provide additional notice where required.
